In remembrance of the late Los Angeles Laker, Mamba Week reintroduces Bryant’s line of sneakers and Lakers jerseys to the public for the first time since late January. The week coincides with Aug. 24, numerically 8.24 — Bryant’s two numbers with the Lakers, which has been declared as Kobe Bryant Day in Orange County. It was voted on by OC supervisors earlier this week to officially honor the Hall of Famer on the designated day of Aug. 24, a region of Southern California that the Bryant family called home.
Nike will release six products belonging to the Mamba line: five pairs of Protro Mamba footwear and the 2017 City edition Lakers jersey.
The ‘Big Stage’ starts the honorary week off with black, white and gold embodiment. Paying tribute to his 2009-10 championship season with a tattoo-style detailing of his accomplishments that year. It’s then followed by ‘5x Champ’ that takes inspiration from the championship jackets Bryant donned following his second and third titles with the Lakers.
The Undefeated x What If packs debut the 27th with two different colorways, the most interesting one paying homage to the 12 franchises who passed on Bryant out of Lower Merion High School in the 1996 draft.
The final installment of the week is the ‘Girls EYBL’ that is influenced by mythological creature Medusa who could freeze anyone with a glare.
At the time of his passing in late January, Nike sold out of all Bryant products. The resale value for those items skyrocketed and Nike had not restocked any of the Mamba products in the following months.
