The month of October kicks off the holiday season and Nike is joining in on the celebration. Dia de Los Muertos has picked up enormous popularity in recent years — thanks to Disney’s animated film ‘Coco’ — and several brands are capitalizing on it.
Nike will release four sneakers in either late October or early November (dates have yet to be announced) in honor of the Mexican holiday. Along with the sneakers, Nike will also have a t-shirt and sweatshirt as part of their Dia de Los Muertos collection.
The Nike Air Max 90 is the most vibrant of the bunch as it resembles the colors and patterns of an alebrije, a sculpture of a fantastical creature that is part of the celebration in Dia de Los Muertos.
Priced at $110 USD, the Nike Blazer Mid 77 represents the use of skeletons and skulls during Day of the Dead. The sneaker is embodied in white while the tongue is black.
DBreak Type is rooted in tradition. Its gold accents resemble the marigold flowers used to decorate altars. It’s purple tongue and laces bring another element of color to the shoe that correlates to the holiday’s colorful element.
Out of all sneakers, it may be the Air Jordan 1 Mid that will sell out first. It comes in a gold-purple colorway with a papel picado aesthetic.
This is Nike’s second go at a Dia de Los Muertos line. Last year it released three sneakers that were headlined by an all-black, with orange accents, Cortez sneaker.
The release will be through the SNKRS app for this year’s shoes and wardrobe will be available through Nike’s site. The words ‘Mi Familia’ are featured in each piece of the collection, as the holiday celebrates family connections.
