Sports documentaries have become increasingly popular in the last couple of years, especially with ESPN’s “The Last Dance” dominating social media in 2020. Now, Netflix is taking its turn for the next craze with legendary footballer Pelé.
The streaming giant is releasing “Pelé” Feb. 23, which details the 12-year career as part of Brazil’s national team that led him to be the only player to win three World Cup titles. Brazil has a long history of World Cup moments and household names, but no one like Pelé was thrusted into the highs and lows of the national team.
The documentary is produced by Pitch Productions as Ben Nicholas and David Tryhorn serve as directors. Academy Award winner Kevin McDonald is an executive producer that brings a unique perspective into how the story unfolds.
“Pelé” is the second sports documentary to drop this early in 2021 as follows HBO’s two-part series of “Tiger” that delves into the rise and fall of Tiger Woods. This is Netflix’s first big shot at sports documentaries and there is no other player to better start with than Pelé.
