KRIMY Maradona's 'Hand of God' jersey

Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ Jersey Sells for $9.28 Million USD

There is no doubt: D10S exists! After several weeks of strong bidding at Sotheby’s, the winner of Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey was finally announced, offering a record sum of $9.28 million dollars.

Originally, Sotheby’s estimated that the final auction price could be around $5 million USD; however, in the end they were not even close, since it was almost double and, in addition, a couple of Guinness records were achieved with this sale.

The records achieved with the Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey, were for the “most expensive football shirt sold at auction” and the “most expensive sports memorabilia sold at auction”.

Hand of God

It should be noted that, during the announcement of the auction, there was a lot of uncertainty as to whether it was really this, the Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey at the time he scored these two historic goals, since there were versions that this garment was worn by the Argentine in the first half of the game, and that, for the second half, he used a different one.

However, Sotheby’s was in charge of presenting with Resolution Photomatching, specific details that confirmed the authenticity of the article, which was in the possession of Steve Hodge, an English soccer player who exchanged the shirt with Maradona after the match.

“I have been the proud owner of this item for over 35 years, ever since Diego and I exchanged jerseys in the tunnel after the famous match. It was an absolute privilege to have played against one of the greatest and most magnificent footballers of all time. It has also been a pleasure to share it with the public for the last 20 years at the National Football Museum, where it has been on display.

The Hand of God shirt has deep cultural significance for the world of football, the people of Argentina and the people of England and I am sure the new owner will be very proud to own the most iconic football shirt in the world.” Hodge mentioned at the start of the auction.

Thus, the Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ jersey, which represents one of the highlights of world football history, passes into the hands of a new owner who, hopefully, will give it the importance it deserves (at least for the amount he paid).
